Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "These new titles in the Smithsonian Readers series (3 new titles) present traditionally high-appeal topics in bright, busy designs. Two-page chapters provide information on a variety of sub-topics, but the bulk of each book is made up of, essentially, an annotated list of different varieties of the item or animal in question. In Trains, Fischer details several different kinds of engines, as well as passenger and freight trains, monorails, high-speed trains, and electric subways. Readers who like to collect knowledge or feel a comprehensive mastery of a topic will especially appreciate this format. The level-1 book (Trains) is geared toward early readers and features text appropriate for beginners and a simple layout, while Sharks! is slightly more complex, being a level-3 book for engaged readers. Regardless of level, both books are filled with information and bright, illustrative photos. A page of stickers and half-a-dozen trading cards in the back matter add to the books' coolness factor but will likely need to be removed before circulating. A brief multiple-choice quiz also allows readers to review the material they read. These books would be excellent choices for a classroom or library, or for individual readers interested in the topics.--Miriam Aronin Copyright 2019 Booklist"
