In the newest Wolfe-family adventure from James Carlos Blake, Rudy and Frank Wolfe are engaging in routine miscellaneous business--some legitimate and some less so--for their family when they stumble upon a stash of high-quality pornographic films in a raid. The plot thickens when their Aunt Catalina, the family matriarch aged 115, recognizes a resemblance to her long-lost sister in one of the young performers. Catalina tasks the boys with tracking the girl down, however improbable a connection may be.

This proves to be no simple task. Soon, Rudy and Frank find themselves moving away from world of porn and towards the upper echelons of the Sinaloa drug cartel, where the mysterious woman has become a particular favorite of the head narco. For their aunt, the woman, and themselves, Frank and Rudy must find a way to extract her from the cartel. A tropical storm threatens their plan but their widespread and steadfast family stands ready to assist them every deadly mile of the way.

Ever daring and innovative, and assisted by the family's ready resources, the Wolfe brothers must run the highest risks in order to achieve the mission assigned them by the Grande Dame.

Published Reviews
Booklist Review: ""It's what we do, we Wolfes, we smuggle." And they've been doing it on both sides of the border--in Texas and in Mexico--through five novels in Blake's Border Noir series. This adventure begins with a gun-smuggling trip gone bad but segues into a rescue mission not directly related to the family business. A cache of pornographic films recovered with the smuggled guns unveils an actress, "Kitty Quick," bearing a striking resemblance to family grande dame Catarina's long-vanished sister. The indomitable, 115-year-old Aunt Cat sends fixers Rudy and Frank, cousins in the Texas branch, to bring Kitty to Cat, who will determine if she's a relative. So begins a rollicking road trip in which the amiable fixers, along with the fetching but no-nonsense Rayo, venture into the porn world and then into the hideaway of Sinaloan drug king El Chubasco, who has acquired Kitty for his harem. The noirish tone is certainly evident here, but this is not as dark as others in the series, more in the vein of a Thomas Perry caper novel, with plenty of blood. As such, it is never less than thoroughly entertaining."

Publisher's Weekly Review: "At the start of Blake's rollicking, if somewhat familiar, fifth Border Noir (after 2017's The Ways of Wolfe), Eddie Gato Wolfe and a small crew aboard a boat in the Gulf of Mexico deliver a shipment of guns to members of the Mexican branch of the Wolfe clan for delivery to the Los Zetas cartel. The Mexican crew takes possession of the guns, only to be ambushed and slaughtered once ashore. The Wolfes quickly root out the culprit, an upstart rival gang member hoping to gain favor by giving the stolen guns to El Chubasco, the notorious head of the Sinaloan cartel. When the Wolfes recover the stolen guns from the rival gang member, they find a cache of upscale pornographic DVDs along with the guns. Kitty Quick, an actor in one of the flicks, bears an uncanny resemblance to 115-year-old Wolfe family matriarch Aunt Catalina's long-lost sister, Sandra. Could Quick be a distant Wolfe relative? The grand dame thinks so, and sends a group of Wolfes to extricate her from the clutches of El Chubasco in a rescue operation that's a bit of a retread from an earlier novel. Though it's not up to Blake's usual high standard, series fans will enjoy this entertaining adventure. Agent: Nat Sobel, Sobel Weber Assoc. (July)"
