One of the most famous buildings in New York City is the Flatiron Building. Why is it so famous? It is shaped like a piece of pie. It only took nine months to complete. What made the Flatiron Building really interesting, however, was the new technique that was used to put it together. A special steel skeleton was used to support the building, then decorative pieces of tile were hung to make the walls. Find out how hard it was to make a building this size fit the shape of available land, as well as how New Yorkers were certain the building would fall down. Book jacket.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "These new books in the Building on a Dream series (5 new titles) bring iconic structures to life for young readers. The authors particularly emphasize the construction of each building, including highlights and flaws, and place it in its historical and geographic context. They also note the structures' role and importance today. The structures span a variety of locations and time periods, so the information in each volume feels fresh. The Flatiron Building discusses both the skyscraper's innovative structure and its unique appearance. Maps, photos, and other images, both historical and current, add interest to the books. The chronology in the back matter aptly summarizes the main points of the book. Overall, these books offer a sophisticated glimpse into some of the world's most famous buildings and structures that can be appreciated by readers of all ages.--Miriam Aronin Copyright 2010 Booklist"
