Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "This visually appealing science resource, last published in 2006, has received some minor updates in its third edition. The content is arranged thematically into 10 sections, including Planet Earth, Living Things, and Human Biology. Each section begins with a brief introduction, followed by single- or double-page entries on related topics that offer a brief overview of the subject. Entries feature a visually appealing balance of colorful illustrations and text, certain to appeal to both casual browsers and students alike. In addition, the illustrations, which range from photographs to cutaways and more, are accompanied by detailed annotations that nicely complement the text. Entries conclude with a boxed area providing see also references. A page dedicated to facts and figures on the topic closes each section. Explanations are clear and accessible, and the writing is lively and engaging. Revisions include mentioning the retirement of the space shuttle program in 2011 as well as the updating of key dates appearing in many of the Facts and Figures pages. The book concludes with a brief glossary (where computer terms are highlighted in a sidebar), a comprehensive index, and a ready-reference section, which offers information on numbers and units of measurement, conversion tables, geometric shapes, and famous scientists in addition to inventions and discoveries. Students requiring a more comprehensive presentation on the sciences may be better served by The New Book of Popular Science (2008), but this eye-catching, updated edition would be a welcome addition to elementary- and middle-school libraries and public libraries and a good replacement for those who own the previous edition.--Ostergard, Maren Copyright 2010 Booklist"
