Classic masterpieces are bold, fascinating, and sometimes shocking--in other words, perfect for creative children who love to be inspired. Fine Art Adventures introduces young artists, ages 6 and up, to key masterpieces and interesting techniques, then lets them loose. Children will: create a Pointillist artwork with paints and a toothbrush, work with plaster to recreate a cave painting, use cardboard and coat hangers to design a mobile sculpture, build a dramatic jungle scene inside an old shoebox, and many more engaging, hands-on projects.

Authors and educators Maja Pitamic and Jill Laidlaw also explore the stories and meanings behind 18 well-known classic masterpieces from art history as inspiration for these kid-tested, exciting, and creative projects. No prior knowledge of art is required--just enthusiasm for the subject and a willingness to discover.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Attractively designed with nicely reproduced art, this introduces a range of artworks, artists, styles, and movements, and includes 36 art projects, ranging from relatively simple to more intricate. Eight thematically organized chapters contain brief overviews, discussions of the selected artworks, and photos illustrating step-by-step instructions for related activities. For example, Color introduces Henri Matisse's bright-hued collage The Snail, its medium, some information about the artist, and a project using tissue paper to create a picture. Shape features Kazimir Malevich and the Suprematist style, and invites readers to create a mobile sculpture. Other chapters include Landscapes, Portraits, and Myths and Legends. The dense text features lively touches and author commentary, and sidebars offer guided questions and tips for the art projects. However, the audience can be unclear: some of the prose and concepts can be complex, and a few of the projects might require adult supervision or assistance, such as a plaque made out of salt dough, which calls for a knife and an oven. Still, for older readers, and educators, this will likely be a good resource.--Rosenfeld, Shelle Copyright 2017 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "This companion to Modern Art Adventures and Three-Dimensional Art Adventures presents 36 projects inspired by classic works of art. The book's eight sections introduce themes relating to art fundamentals (color, shape), subjects (animals, myths), and types of work (landscapes, portraiture). Projects include using glue to create a three-dimensional version of an Albrecht Dürer portrait ("This project concentrates on the line of a portrait rather than its color"), creating a snow globe inspired by a circular winter landscape from Barent Avercamp, and decorating a "story box" based on Paolo Uccello's St. George and the Dragon. The projects are well-targeted to the target audience, and their transformative nature-using paintings as inspiration to create masks, paperweights, sculptures, and more-smartly emphasizes how inspiration can take an artist down surprising paths.
