Struggling to forget a crumbling marriage, forty-year-old Anna Lucia Lottol comes to Venice to visit an old friend--but instead of finding solace, she is dragged into the police station and accused of murdering a money-laundering count with whom she had a brief affair. A US Treasury officer with brains and athleticism, Anna fights to clear her name in a seductive city full of watery illusions. As she works to pry information from a cast of recalcitrant characters sometimes denying what she sees and hears, she succeeds in unleashing a powerful foe bent on destroying her. Will she save herself and vanquish her enemies, including her darkest fears? A mysterious tapestry of murder, betrayal, and family, Venetian Blood is a story of one woman's brave quest for the truth --before it's too late.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Anna Lucia Lottol, a forensic financial investigator, travels to Venice both to visit Margo, a longtime friend who has been staying with Count Favier, patriarch of a prominent family, and to settle a matter with Venetian financier Count Sergio Corrin, with whom she had an unfortunate liaison at a conference the prior spring as her marriage was crumbling. Before Anna meets Margo at the train station, however, Detective Biondi arrests her for Corrin's murder at a masquerade ball the night before. Biondi releases her, and Favier protects her as Margo and Anna join the city's social life. Amid elegant ancient grandeur, romantic canals, and posh parties, Anna makes useful contacts, but also some enemies. She unearths financial misdeeds, but, in the process, she puts her job at risk. Woven through the efforts to find the real killer are the stories of Favier's wife and children, who were lost in a gondola accident years before, and Anna's own childhood, raised by her Italian grandfather. Elements of the plot seem improbable, and there are too many coincidental leaps. Still, the descriptions of Venice are lush, the city map appreciated, and the characters memorable in this debut mystery, which will appeal to both mystery fans and armchair travelers.--Muller, Karen Copyright 2017 Booklist"
