Summary
On her eighteenth birthday, genetic information from Lee Parker's closed adoption is unlocked. She also sees an old photograph of a genetic relative, a nineteenth Century woman with hair and eyes likes hers, standing in a pile of rubble from an ecological disaster next to none other than Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross. Determined to identify the woman in the photo and unearth the mystery of that captured moment, Lee digs into history. Her journey takes her from California to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, from her present financial woes to her past of privilege, from the daily grind to an epic disaster. Once Lee's heroic DNA is revealed, will she decide to forge a new fate?
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Alternating between present-day sunny California and the Gilded Age of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Hogan builds a sweeping story of two young women tied together through generations. In present day, Lee Parker lives in the pool house of her adopted mother's employer after her dreams of attending a prestigious university were dashed by her father's poor investments. When she turned 18, some genetic information about her closed adoption became available to her. During her visit to the Social Services office, she sees a photograph of a relative and becomes determined to find out who the woman is. In 1889, Elizabeth Haberlin spent her summers at a lush resort with only the wealthiest residents at South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, a bold young woman on the verge of her debutante ball. Elizabeth struggled for nothing, but when tragedy befalls those around her, she changed in ways she never thought possible. Generations of family history tie these two young women together, and this is the story of how Lee searches out her genetic family and how that family came to be.--Borsa, Emily Copyright 2016 Booklist"
