Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Tapping into The X-Men's central metaphor of racial fear, Lemire faces his characters with both the sterilization of their species and the deepening hatred of a world that sees them as disease-carrying monsters. Nevertheless, defending against lynch mobs, a demon attack on their Limbo-based headquarters, or contending with gene-engineer Mister Sinister, they staunchly carry forward a message of hope and tolerance. Lemire acknowledges and dismisses The X-Men's heavy, heavy burden of continuity with a strategic it's complicated and simply weaves their history smoothly into his story, producing a book that honors longtime fans and also works as a good entry point for new readers. While he assembles a team composed of several faces recognizable to moviegoers, an aged Wolverine and a de-aged Jean Grey benefit most from Lemire's pedigree as a writer of complex emotional landscapes as the characters confront personal dilemmas of guilt and responsibility. Ramos' heavily manga-influenced art is in keeping with a contemporary aesthetic, but his battle scenes are obfuscatingly chaotic, and Lemire's story would've been better matched by a more emotionally nuanced style.--Karp, Jesse Copyright 2016 Booklist"
