The new book from the James Beard Award-winning cartoonist and designer/producer of Netflix's Bojack Horseman

"Frankly speaking, you should get off your buns and go buy this book -- you'll relish it."-- Amy Sedaris

"Hot Dog Taste Test roasts food obsession in its many forms with a sometimes gross, sometimes charming collection of watercolors, sketches and comics." -- Lucy Feldman, Wall Street Journal

"[ Hot Dog Taste Test is] hilarious and at times breathtakingly inventive." -- Graeme Macmillan, Wired

"Hanawalt's art balances the somber and the playful... [and her] hybrids make use of the estrangement between human and animal."-- Chris Randle, The Guardian

Hot Dog Taste Test serves up Lisa Hanawalt's devastatingly funny comics, saliva-stimulating art, and deliciously screwball lists as she skewers the pomposities of foodie subculture. From the James Beard Award-winning cartoonist and production designer/producer of Bojack Horseman , Hot Dog Taste Test dishes out five-star laughs as Hanawalt keenly muses on pop culture, relationships, and the animal in all of us.

Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "More of a varied collection than a narrative work, Hot Dog Taste Test showcases Hanawalt's (My Dirty Dumb Eyes, 2013) colorful lists, essays, and whacked-out illustrations, much of them food-based. (And when it comes to food, Hanawalt clearly knows her stuff: she's won a James Beard Award for her comics and essays in Lucky Peach magazine.) Hanawalt's media is mixed, too: pencil sketches, bright watercolors, and even photographs of her sculptures appear here. Food diaries and lists play a big part, with toilet humor in an important, supporting role. On lovely flights of fancy, bird-people go to the deli, try on bathing suits, and get overtaken by their houseplants. In longer, more confessional essays, Hanawalt spends a day shadowing and being fed by renowned celebrity-chef Wylie Dufresne, blisses out at a river otter sanctuary in California, and lives large during a buffet-fueled weekend in Vegas. A feast of images, formats, and general laugh-out-loud fun there's so much here and still, somehow, not enough of it.--Bostrom, Annie Copyright 2016 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "Hanawalt, the author of My Dirty Dumb Eyes and designer for the animated series Bojack Horseman, turns her cartooning eye toward food and foodie culture-among other topics-in her second collection. With essays on Vegas buffets, Argentinian cuisine, and swimming with otters (many originally published in Lucky Peach magazine), Hanawalt takes a kebab skewer to the pomposity that's grown up around food and dining. The cartoons evoke an idiosyncratic absurdity akin to Roz Chast's work ("Baking tip: keep your sweet tooth away from your salt molar"). Of particular interest is Hanawalt's account of observing Wylie Dufresne, which approaches the chef and his work not from a pedestal of haughty criticism or with the kowtowing awe that pervades "cheflebrities," but simply as a woman who loves food of all kinds. New Yorkers will get a special kick out of the detailed breakdown of the city's sidewalk cuisine, but Hanawalt's self-aware humor (with a side order of deeply affecting personal stories) will whet anyone's appetite.
