Summary
A beautifully illustrated, action-packed middle grade adventure in the spirit of Edward Gorey and Lemony Snicket.

Warren the 13th is the lone bellhop, valet, groundskeeper, and errand boy of his family's ancient hotel. The strange, shadowy mansion is full of crooked corridors and mysterious riddles--and it just might be home to a magical treasure known as the All-Seeing Eye. But if Warren is going to find the hidden treasure, he'll need to solve several other mysteries first: What is the strange creature lurking in the hotel boiler room? Who is the ghostly girl creeping around the garden's hedge maze? And why is the hotel's only guest covered in bandages? Full of puzzles, secret codes, outrageous inventions, and hundreds of intricate illustrations, Warren the 13th and The All-Seeing Eye will delight and confound readers of all ages.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "The once-grand Warren Hotel has gone to seed since the death of Warren the thirteenth's father five years ago. Though his uncle technically runs the place, young Warren is the hotel's maintenance crew, housekeeping staff, and bellboy all rolled into one. Keeping eight floors tidy is no easy task, especially with his cruel aunt Annaconda tearing rooms apart to search for the hotel's All-Seeing Eye an object legend says is hidden somewhere on the grounds. An old journal, cryptic clues, and a mysterious guest soon usher in a full-blown hunt for the Eye (whatever it may be), with Warren desperate to save the hotel and his birthright by finding it first. This madcap Victorian gothic mystery is the first in a series that will delight fans of Lemony Snicket and Pseudonymous Bosch with its puzzles, magic, unusual characters, and bighearted protagonist. Its distinct black-and-red illustrations and two-column page design will grab readers' attention, while the quirky, engaging story will keep them hooked. A treat for the eyes and imagination.--Smith, Julia Copyright 2015 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "Based on a concept created by book designer/illustrator Staehle, this impeccably designed novel pulls from literary and visual sources that include a Victorian-style two-column text layout, intricate engravinglike illustrations in red and black, and an adventure with echoes of classic children's titles like Raskin's The Westing Game and Dahl's The Witches. In fact, witches are just one problem facing 12-year-old Warren-he looks part gremlin, part Burnett's Little Lord Fauntleroy-who stands to inherit the Warren Hotel where he lives and works. The hotel has fallen on hard times under the stewardship of Warren's uncle Rupert, and Rupert's new bride, Aunt Annaconda, is tearing it apart as she searches for a mysterious artifact known as the All-Seeing Eye. Once word of the treasure gets out, a lack of guests ceases to be an issue, though others quickly arise in its place. Del Rio, a veteran of the comics world, knows how to keep the story moving, supplying twists and double-crosses to keep Warren (and readers) guessing. Stylish, exciting, funny, and just slightly macabre, this entertaining novel bodes well for Warren's future adventures. Ages 8-12. (Nov.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved."
