Varsity 170

Summary
Theme: Hi-lo, Young Adult, teen, realistic fiction, grief, depression, wrestling. Never in his wildest dreams could he imagine his best day turning into his worst. Chad and Marcus ruled the school. Smart. Athletic. Popular. A looming wrestle off for their weight class made Chad jumpy. Marcus told him to chill. But with one slam to the mat, Marcus would be dead. Hard-hitting, contemporary young adult fiction is not trendy-it's not dystopia. There are no vampires, no werewolves, no castles. It's real life. It's unflinching. Gravel Road highlights the talent of YA authors committed to creating realistic fiction with emotional authenticity. No topic is off-limits: suicide, homosexuality, drugs, rape, gangs, bullying. Teens live with this reality each day. And they find a way to survive. Each paperback book is 116 to 268 pages.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Chad and Marcus have been best friends since kindergarten. Varsity wrestlers with an eye on college, the two of them are looking forward to ruling the school during their senior year. Everything falls apart during their first wresting practice when Marcus suddenly collapses during a sparring match with Chad and later dies at the hospital. Chad retreats into silence, unable to communicate his grief and convinced that everyone blames him for Marcus' death. Turning to beer to calm his thoughts, he develops a drinking habit that ultimately lands him in court for shoplifting alcohol. Chad is forced to attend grief-counseling sessions and eventually finds the words to express his sorrow and guilt. This dark story of friendship and grief is realistic in both its portrayal of the ruinous results of isolation and the hope that early intervention and support can bring. Like other books in the Gravel Road series, short chapters and a straightforward first-person narrative keep the pace brisk without minimizing the seriousness of the message.--Szwarek, Magan Copyright 2015 Booklist"
