Summary

Raffi is a shy boy who doesn't like noisy games and is often teased at school. But when he gets the idea of making a scarf for his dad's birthday he is full of enthusiasm, even though the other children think it is girly to knit. Then the day draws near for the school pageant, and there is one big problem - no costume for the prince. And that's when Raffi has his most brilliant idea of all - to make a prince's cape. On the day of the pageant, Raffi's cape is the star of the show.

Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Raffi sometimes feels different from the other kids at his school. He's smaller than his classmates, he likes to wear bright colors, and he doesn't like playing loud games. When he's intrigued by his teacher quietly knitting a scarf during recess, she shows him how, and he loves it so much, he sets out to make a scarf for his dad's birthday. Soon Raffi is knitting everywhere, and when his class puts on a play about a prince, he decides to sew a cape, too. Raffi's classmates are amazed by his project, and they even start to think his hobby is pretty cool. Chamberlain's illustrations are cheery and exuberant just like Raffi's creations, many of which appear on the endpapers. This subtle exploration of nontraditional gender roles (crafty Raffi wonders if he's a tomgirl) focuses on hobbies and activities rather than identity, which is an especially useful approach for the target audience. Little ones who feel different will likely be reassured by how Raffi embraces what he loves.--Hunter, Sarah Copyright 2014 Booklist"
