Summary
December 7, 1941-the day a sleeping giant awoke. Japan's surprise attack devastated the American Naval Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and forced the Americans into WWII. These moving accounts of the lives affected by the assault capture the scope of the day's emotions and repercussions. Viewpoints of both historical and imagined characters include the mother of a Japanese pilot, officials from both countries, and the grandchild of a WWII veteran.Powerful illustrations accompany every tale.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Garland tells the story of 16 characters' experiences leading up to and during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Some of these characters, such as Admiral Kimmel, the commander of the U.S. Pacific fleet, or Dorrie Miller, the mess attendant on the USS West Virginia, are real, while others, such as an unnamed Hawaiian islander who sets the scene in the months leading up to the Japanese attack, are imagined. The bulk of the story follows the events of December 7, but the book also tells the tale of a Japanese widow in August 1945 and of a young girl in 2001 visiting the USS Arizona memorial with her veteran grandfather. Although no firm distinction exists between real and imagined characters in the narrative, Garland includes summary historical notes in the appendix and a well-researched bibliography. She offers a large diversity in characters across ethnicity, age, time, gender, and connection to the broader conflict, bringing a strong personal humanity to an epic event. Vibrant, emotional paintings illuminate this already lyrical story.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2010 Booklist"
