Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "The latest in Mississippi's series of interview collections discovers the great playwright hashing and rehashing his career and his illnesses. Fortunately for sustained readability, he contradicts himself enough to make the whole volume intriguing. Unfortunately, Williams never delved very deeply into either his work or his life when he talked with interviewers, so it is the questioners' talents that often make or break a piece. Best of the bunch are Rex Reed's romp with the 60-year-old Williams through New Orleans, during which the bitchy reporter hauls some good quotes and anecdotes out of the playwright; Tom Buckley's 1970 Atlantic Monthly piece, which Williams denounced as full of ``the most dangerous misquotations, distortions, and libel'' (maybe, but it sure is fun); and a palaver between the playwright and St. Louis' other contemporary literary lion, William Burroughs. An interesting curiosity is a very early (1944) interview with a St. Louis Star-Times drama critic named William Inge. Biochronology; to be indexed.
