Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller

Inspired by Charles Dickens' immortal classic A Christmas Carol, BATMAN: NOEL features different interpretations of The Dark Knight, along with his enemies and allies, in different eras.

Along the way, Batman must come to terms with his past, present and future as he battles villains from the campy 1960s to dark and brooding menaces of today, while exploring what it means to be the hero that he is. Members of Batman's supporting cast enact roles analogous to those from A Christmas Carol, with Robin, Catwoman, Superman, The Joker and more playing roles that will be familiar to anyone who knows Dickens' original holiday tale.

Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "For a hero with no superpowers, Batman shows a remarkable resistance to market saturation, and here slips comfortably into the seemingly awkward fit of Dickens' Christmas Carol. To be sure, the virtuoso art of Bermejo, who drew Brian Azzarello's Joker (2008), helps as he not only portrays the physical world with jaw-dropping precision but also captures the metaphysical nature of his subject. You see every line and curve as streetlights glint off the molding of Batman's cowl, even as you feel the harshness of the shadows he carries within him. You see the grime on Gotham's streets, even as you feel the grime in its soul. In his first time out as scripter, Bermejo manages to plumb the parallels of Batman and Scrooge effectively enough and speaks in a strong narrative voice as Batman uses a small-time hood (the Bob Cratchit stand-in) as bait to hunt down the Joker. With the likes of Catwoman and Superman filling in for Christmas ghosts, Bermejo presents a piece of gritty urban action with some real Christmas heart, all wrapped up in some truly stunning visuals.--Karp, Jesse Copyright 2010 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "What happens when Batman gets a bad cold? Does Gotham and its perpetually overwhelmed police force fall to pieces? Bermejo's somewhat tongue-in-cheek answer to that question puts the Dark Knight-who, by the way, doesn't seem to believe he can get sick, no matter how bad the cough claims otherwise-into a scenario that's mostly A Christmas Carol, with a dash of It's a Wonderful Life. A crusty, streetwise narrator follows the story's Bob Cratchit stand-in, a low-level crook who Batman is willing to dangerously dangle as bait-no matter that Bob has a Tiny Tim-like son at home. Ghosts of Batman's more lighthearted past swing by, whether it's the memory of Robin or an all-too-real Catwoman, who doesn't get why he won't play with her like he once did. The moral hangs heavy over Bermejo's snowy, painterly Gotham, with Batman as the grizzled old vigilante trying to remember why he got into this game in the first place, and whether it's even worth it. As a follow-up to the bestselling Joker graphic novel that he painted, Bermejo has created a clever, thoughtful piece of work, and one of the more satisfying Batman one-offs. (Nov.)
