Summary
The fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling series by Lisa Lutz, featuring the fearless private investigator Izzy Spellman and her quirky, yet endearing, family of sleuths.

For the first time in Spellman history, Isabel Spellman might be the most normal member of her family. Mom has taken on an outrageous assortment of extracurricular activities. Dad has a secret. Her brother and sister are at war, but neither will reveal the source of the conflict. While domestic disturbances abound, there is one source of sanity in the Spellman household: Demetrius Merriweather, employee of the month for eighteen months straight.

Things aren't any simpler on the business side of Spellman Investigations. First, Rae is hired to follow a girl, only to fake the surveillance reports. Then a socialite has Isabel tail her husband, despite a conspicuous lack of suspicion. A man in a sweater vest hires the Spellmans to follow his sister, who turns out to be the socialite. Izzy won't stop hunting for the answers--even when they threaten to shatter both the business and the family.

Readers are sure to love the next novel in a "series that keeps getting better and better" ( Publishers Weekly , starred review).
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Private investigator Isabel Izzy Spellman is not your typical gumshoe. In fact, everything about the thirtysomething San Francisco sleuth is a bit offbeat, from her quirky family to the curious cases she takes on. In this fifth installment (after The Spellmans Strike Again, 2010) in Lutz's irreverent series, Izzy is submerged in surveillance, monitoring the movements of a devious UC Berkeley coed and keeping close watch on the apartment of a fastidious math professor. Meanwhile, Izzy's mother, Olivia, engages in an eclectic collection of extracurricular activities, including a Russian-language class in which she learns such valuable phrases as The gentleman will pay for everything. Isabel bonds with her boyfriend's mother while ignoring her beau's repeated requests to discuss their unraveling relationship. And siblings David and Rae butt heads over Rae's perverse influence upon David's infant daughter. With each entry, Lutz's plots, while amusing, have become a bit more predictable. All the same, this is a wise (and wisecracking) choice for mystery readers seeking a break from the genre's bloodier fare.--Block, Allison Copyright 2010 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "Three cases, all surveillance operations, start out routinely enough but prove anything but in Lutz's engaging fifth novel featuring San Francisco PI Isabel "Izzy" Spellman and her eccentric family of investigators (after 2010's The Spellmans Strike Again). A wife wants her husband followed; a brother wants his sister observed; and parents hire the Spellmans to keep tabs on their Berkeley freshman daughter. Things soon become more complicated as unexpected connections crop up among the initially unrelated cases. Meanwhile, siblings Rae and David are at war over an incident neither will discuss; mother Olivia is overbooked with strange new hobby classes; father Albert makes a major decision without informing his children; and Izzy, loathe to discuss her personal life, refuses to define her relationship with boyfriend Henry Stone. Lutz's dry, biting humor is in full force, yet there's more than a hint of melancholy to be found in Izzy's increasingly solitary pursuits. Agent: Stephanie Kip Rostan, Levine Greenberg. (Mar.)
