Booklist Review: "When Mark Millar applied his trademark approach of extreme content to the Avengers, we got The Ultimates. Carrying on the tradition of extreme comic storytelling, Loeb continues the tale of the überteam comprising Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor from Marvel's Ultimate continuity. While the story is ostensibly about the betrayals and battles the Ultimates must deal with as Loki invades New York with an army of monstrosities in order to lure out his fallen brother, Thor, the overall experience is more about impact. Loeb tries to flesh out each character's internal life, but it is ultimately overshadowed by Cho's physically perfect (and distinctly R-rated) figures and panoramic superpowered throw downs. What most readers will take away are the numerous splash pages and double-page spreads of posed heroes, and the titillating, nearly nude antics. (Were fans demanding an opportunity to see Tony Stark French-kiss someone?) This is wide-screen, large-scale adult superheroing.
