Summary
After nearly a decade as a sous-chef in a trendy eatery, and fresh off a divorce from the owner, Jenna Stevens is desperate for a change. So when she spots a for-lease sign in her hometown, she impulsively decides to open her very own cooking store. Her crash course in business is aided by a streetwise store manager and Jenna's adoptive mother. But as soon as she gains a foothold in her new life, in walk her birth parents--aging hippies on a quest to reconnect.

Now Jenna must figure out how to reconcile the free-spirited Serenity and Tom with the parents who raised her and decide whether to open her heart to a man who just might be the best thing to happen to her in years. All without sacrificing her newly found dreams. In the end, Jenna will find that there is no perfect family, only the people we love....

Booklist Review: "*Starred Review* Jenna's ex-husband has not only broken her heart with his cheating ways, but he's also crushed her soul and what little faith she has left in herself as a professional chef. She leaves L.A. and heads back to her small Texas hometown, where she opens a culinary store, Grate Expectations. But with her lack of retail training and her introverted personality, she seems to be driving away as many customers as she pulls in. Flamboyant Violet, redeeming herself from a life on the street, becomes Jenna's assistant, and her creativity and people sense mesh perfectly with Jenna's knowledge and skill as a chef. However, just as business begins to boom, and Violet has boosted Jenna's confidence enough for her to offer cooking classes, a hippie-ish couple walks into Grate Expectations claiming to be Jenna's birth parents, and that's not their only secret. This poignant tale of family dynamics, the jarring impact of change, and eventual acceptance and healing is sure to please Mallery's (Straight from the Hip, 2009; Lip Service, 2009; Sunset Bay, 2009) many, devoted fans.--Mosley, Shelle.
