Summary
Told from a female zombie's perspective, this smart, witty detective series mixes urban fantasy and romantic dramedy.

Gwendolyn "Gwen" Dylan is a 20-something gravedigger in an eco-friendly cemetery. Once a month she must eat a human brain to keep from losing her memories, but in the process she becomes consumed with the thoughts and personality of the dead person - until she eats her next brain. She sets out to fulfi ll the dead person's last request, solve a crime or right a wrong.

Our zombie girl detective is joined by a radical supporting cast: her best friend Eleanor, who happens to be a swinging '60s ghost, a posse of paintball blasting vampires, a smitten were-dog and a hot but demented mummy.

Booklist Review: "With bookshelves spilling over with zombie lit, it's a miracle no one's come up with this simple, rather ingenious premise before. Zombie Gwen a short-haired Michelle Pfeiffer look-alike works as a grave digger so that she can have access to fresh brains. When she eats those brains, though, she sees the memories of the dead person and is compelled to tidy up his or her affairs. Gwen's latest feast jump-starts a murder mystery, and with the help of her friends Ellie (a ghost) and Scott (a wereterrier), she zeros in on a mysterious gent with ties to ancient Egypt. Also on the scene: an enclave of female vampires who look like they just stepped off of a runway and Gwen's love interest, who happens to be a budding Van Helsing. The monster-mash premise is an overused one, but Roberson's likable heroes strike just the right conversational tone. As drawn by Allred, Gwen's heroin-chic grittiness balances out her beauty though it's still rather shocking to turn the page and finding her gorging on brains. Cinema-ready, to say the least.--Kraus, Danie. Copyright 2010 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "SF author Roberson and comics icon Allred team for quirky take on zombie "life." When we meet Gwen, the zombie girl at the center of the story, there's been an uptick in postmortem activity in Eugene, Ore. We have a gang of mean vampire girls who run a paintball center as a way to lure young men to them; a were-terrier who's in love with Gwen; an ancient Egyptian mummy who wants Gwen to join forces with him; a cheerful girl ghost from the 1960s; and a monster-hunter named Horatio who Gwen falls for before realizing what he does for a living. When she eats a dead boy's brain, Gwen is overwhelmed with his memories and finds herself compelled to avenge his murder. The story moves at a rapid pace, pulling you right along with it, and Allred makes the characters cute and likable in spite of their monstrous qualities. Roberson has put together a good story with plenty to keep readers interested. (Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved."
