Paying homage to the hardboiled crime novel genre while infusing the novel with his grisly humor and lasciviousness, Denis Johnson presents Nobody Move. In Bakersfield, California, a bumbling group of lowly misfits compete against one another for a multimillion-dollar payday.
From the National Book Award-winning, bestselling author of Tree of Smoke comes a provocative thriller set in the American West.   Nobody Move , which first appeared in the pages of Playboy , is the story of an assortment of lowlifes in Bakersfield, California, and their cat-and-mouse game over $2.3 million. Touched by echoes of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, Nobody Move is at once an homage to and a variation on literary form. It salutes one of our most enduring and popular genres-the American crime novel-but does so with a grisly humor and outrageousness that are Denis Johnson's own. Sexy, suspenseful, and above all entertaining, Nobody Move shows one of our greatest novelists at his versatile best.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "After Tree of Smoke (2007), Johnson's meaty (and National Book Award-winning) Vietnam opus, this slim crime novel, first published serially in the pages of Playboy, might seem a mere digestif but, if so, it's a drink for someone who likes to knock back three fingers of whiskey after a drive-through dinner of cheeseburgers and fries. Set in the margins of California's Central Valley, a milieu that in some ways recalls Already Dead (1997), this pinballing tale concerns Jimmy Luntz, a compulsive gambler who owes money; Gambol, Juarez, and the Tall Man, the loan sharks who want to collect; and Anita Desilvera, an alcoholic knockout plotting to steal the money she's been framed for embezzling. Revenge-minded lowlifes clawing for cash constitute a classic crime trope but, as with the most satisfying crime fiction, plot is tertiary to character and setting. Readers won't know who will win Will it be the ballsy gambler or the psycho who wants to eat the gambler's balls? indeed, they may not even know who they're rooting for. But getting there is all the fun, with dry dialogue and surprising turns of phrase all adding up to something that seems both fresh and inevitable. Fans of Jim Thompson, Elmore Leonard, Barry Gifford, and even David Lynch (who, after all, filmed Gifford's Wild at Heart) will all find something to savor.--Graff, Keir Copyright 2009 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "Lowlifes have never had it this good. Will Patton delivers a flawless reading of Johnson's novel of life on the lam. Patton, whose narration of Johnson's Book of Smoke was honored with an Audie Award, lowers his voice to a purring world-weary, chain smoking growl. He embodies each character with absolute authority--gambling addict Jimmy Luntz, on the run from kingpin Juarez, Juarez's bumbling strongman Gambol and the alcoholic karaoke aficionado, Anna Desilvera, who has the FBI on her tail. Listeners will be hooked--and quite possibly in stitches--from the first sentence of Patton's virtuosic performance. A Farrar, Straus & Giroux hardcover (Reviews, Jan. 12). (Apr.)
