Summary
Like a slick, gray torpedo, a dolphin breaks the water's surface and leaps into a graceful arc. Its shiny skin glistens in the sunlight, just before it dives deeply again. Marine and river dolphins are highly social mammals that live in groups called schools in oceans and rivers. While many people are fascinated with dolphins, humans also have caused them harm. Fishing practices once decreased the number of marine dolphins. River dolphins are greatly affected by the pollution created by humans. Yet many people are working to protect dolphins and their natural habitats. Learn more in this edition of Nature Watch.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 3^-6. From the Nature Watch Book series, these volumes offer readers information and plenty of full-color photographs. Although many libraries may already have Stone's 1997 book Cougars (in Lerner's Early Bird Nature Books series), the new volume has a longer text, written for older readers and printed in smaller type. Like the other volume, the new volume includes discussions of habitat, hunting, kittens, and cougars and people, but it has more information, and most of the photos are new. In Dolphins, Walker discusses the animal's physical characteristics, intelligence, communication, behavior, life cycle, and relations with people. Captioned photos illustrate the text. Two attractive volumes in a dependable series. --Carolyn Phelan"
