Booklist Review: "Serving as an epilogue for two of Marvel's recent major events, namely Civil War (2006-2007) and The Death of Captain America (2007), Fallen Son proves that the power and depth of a story tend to reside in its quiet character moments. Hung on the high concept of assigning each of the five stages of grief to a different popular superhero, we learn how the likes of Wolverine (denial), Spider-Man (depression), and Iron Man (acceptance) come to terms with the death of the moral center of Marvel's universe. Loeb, an executive producer of TV's Heroes, has frequently let spectacle overwhelm character in his recent comic work, but here he thoughtfully distinguishes each character's inner world amid a slightly smaller scale of action and conflict. And the art is nothing short of stupendous, as Marvel calls upon five of mainstream comics' current superstars to deepen character for a change, rather than produce dramatic clashes. John Romita Jr.'s combination of moodiness and dynamism in a stylistic homage to Captain America's creator, Jack Kirby, and John Cassaday's beautifully polished images and elegant, beautifully rendered figures are two standouts. Even without knowledge of the stories leading up to it, readers will find this mature and touching collection to be surprisingly potent all on its own.--Karp, Jesse Copyright 2008 Booklist"
