Summary
The brief, but heartfelt prayers in this whimsically illustrated book are the perfect compliment to any meal. Full of thanksgiving for the food we enjoy each day, the simple prayers remember those who are less fortunate while celebrating the delicious nourishment we receive from the earth. A treasure for anyone who is grateful for all that they receive on a daily basis. A wonderful gift for children or adults.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "PreS-Gr. 2. This pretty little book offers 24 graces to say before meals along with two short, after-meal prayers of thanks. Attributions include an African grace, a Chinese grace, a Mennonite children's prayer, From Luke 1:1:2-3, and a few named sources, such as Thomas Tallis and Isaac Watts. Presumably the few without attribution are those written by Rock herself. The quality varies from fine to prosaic. Although some of the blessings display explicitly Christian references, most are more general in their frames of reference. Consistently accomplished, Jay's stylized paintings brighten and warm the pages, visually underscoring the through-the-day theme of the graces' arrangement in the book and bringing the many verses into a coherent whole. A possible choice for parochial school and church collections as well as large public libraries. --Carolyn Phelan Copyright 2006 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "Grace-a brief prayer of thanks usually said at mealtime-is often among the first prayers that children learn. A Child's Book of Graces by Lois Rock, illus. by Alison Jay, collects child-friendly blessings that will be welcomed at many a family table, e.g. "Morning is here,/ The table is spread,/ Thanks be to God,/ Who gives us bread."
