The conflict occupies nearly all this book; the protagonist of the noirish, seemingly tangential opening story is brought into the mainstream in the final pages; and only the humorous interlude featuring sibling demons who look like fly-ins from Richard Moore's Boneyard relieves the overall suspense and darkly foreboding atmosphere.
