Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "This update of the 1991 edition and 1994 supplement profiles American and Canadian writers from Anne Bradstreet through contemporary authors. In addition to biographical profiles, each entry offers analyses of significant works of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. The revision covers 339 writers in six alphabetically arranged volumes, beginning with nature writer Edward Abbey and ending with young adult author Paul Zindel. Some 73 authors are new. Among the additions are Canadian authors (for example, Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje), minority and women authors, and young adult authors, such as M. E. Kerr and Madeleine L'Engle. All the original entries have been reevaluated, and 100 have been substantially revised, adding material to cover recent developments, such as titles published or awards received. All the bibliographies have been updated. Discussion Topics sidebars, consisting of five to seven analytical questions, are a new feature. The format for all articles, which run 6 to 13 pages, is uniform. Place and dates of birth and death and a succinct explanatory statement of the author's literary contribution and import head each entry. Most entries are accompanied by a clear black-and-white portrait. The main text consists of a biographical section; an analysis of the body of work (including style, dominant themes, and literary characteristics); discussions of individual novels, plays, poems, short stories, and essays, often with black-and-white thumbnail reproductions of book covers; and a summary of the author's legacy. Bibliographies include both a comprehensive list of the author's works and a selected list of print sources about the author. The writing style, despite being the work of numerous academic contributors, is uniformly engaging and lively in tone. The biographical sections read like good novels, and the analyses are clear and involving. The Discussion Topics sidebars pose questions that lead to further analysis and a deeper appreciation of the author's oeuvre. The publisher notes that these sidebars are designed for book discussion groups as well as teachers and students. Points of entry are excellent. Each volume begins with a detailed volume table of contents, including the page number of each article and a list of the works that are discussed. Volume 6 concludes with four different reference tools: a Glossary of Literary Terms ; a categorical listing that groups authors by genre, country, gender, and ethnic identity; and both author and title indexes. Encyclopedia of American Literature (Facts On File, 2002) has approximately 1,900 fairly short entries for writers, movements, genres, styles, and more. Each of its three volumes covers a particular era, thereby providing a chronological slant. The more scholarly Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature (2004) treats approximately 250 authors as well as important works, literary movements, and themes. The Salem set adds Canadian authors to the mix as well as offering advantages in terms of organization and usability. Useful both as a guide for discussion and a research and reference source, this has a place in any collection where American literature is a focus, from the high-school level on up.\b --Ann Welton Copyright 2007 Booklist"
