Summary
Everyone on the farm thinks Thomas and Joseph are sloppy, dim-witted pigs. Thomas and Joseph are content, but the other animals are not. The hens want the pigs to paint their pen, the rabbit wants them to eat healthier food, and the duck wants them to dig a water hole andtake a bath.

Even though the other animals try to show them how it's done, the pigs can't seem to do anything right.Maybe being lazy isn't as dumb as it seems.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "PreS-Gr. 2. Two irresistible pigs, Thomas and Joseph, thwart their bossy farmyard neighbors a la Tom Sawyer in this amusing tale. Two hens, a rabbit, and a duck are disgusted with the messy pigpen (and the food Thomas and Joseph eat). But when the hens propose that the pigs paint the pigpen fence, the pigs prove so clumsy that the hens paint it themselves. So too with picking vegetables and digging a water hole for the pigs to bathe in. Alert children will see the end coming: the other animals realize that the pigs are not so dumb. Droll facial expressions and body language in the watercolor, ink, and colored pencil pictures create lively personalities in the farmyard cast of characters. Fans of Piggie Pie (1995) and Palatini's other books will appreciate anew the writer's skill in playing with language; the repetition, rhythm, and alliteration will make the story a pleasure to read aloud. --Kathleen Odean Copyright 2006 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "With understated humor and a somewhat labored plot, the team behind Moosetache and Bad Boys introduces Joseph and Thomas, a pair of happy, contented pigs whose slobby behavior disturbs the rest of the barnyard. " ?That place is a pig sty,' cluck[s] one hen to the other. ?Disgraceful.' " Cole's skilled use of line and penchant for humor conveys the sleepy pigs' unperturbed personalities as he contrasts them with the remaining cast-an outraged vegetarian rabbit, a spick-and-span duck wielding a bar of soap, and the tidy hens whose feathers are decidedly ruffled. Even though the sly oinkers' conversation is minimal (they say only, "Oink" or "Oink?"), Cole's drawings communicate their meaning with droll expressions. The determined animals try to teach the sloppy pair how to spruce up, but Joseph and Thomas just can't seem to get the hang of it. The hens end up painting the fence, the rabbit picks the veggies, and the duck digs a hole for a bathtub. Palatini includes plenty of punchy verbs to describe each task the pigs are supposed to learn. The rabbit's mantra, "Hip. Hop. Hip. Hop. Pull. Pull. Pull," morphs into the pigs' translation, "Tramp. Stamp. Tramp. Stamp. Yank. Yank. Squash." The exhausted animals laugh together at their own cleverness-until they take a second look at the munching, chuckling pigs, and realize the last laugh is definitely on them. Ages 4-8. (Apr.)
