Booklist Review: "Gr. 9-12. This concise, appealingly designed writing guide offers practical advice to students on how to successfully complete essay assignments. Topics covered include choosing a topic, brainstorming, researching, crafting and defending a thesis statement, and revising. In addition to the basic stages of the writing process, the book also discusses common types of assignments--compare-and-contrast essays, persuasive essays, book reports, personal narratives, and others. The last chapter offers excellent advice on preparing for the SAT essay, followed by a well-edited list of book and Web resources (including some that publish teens' work). Throughout, key concepts are highlighted through sidebar features, creative fonts and graphics, and plenty of examples of "ordinary" versus "extraordinary" writing. Considering the turmoil essay assignments often provoke, many high-school and public libraries will want to add this clear, well-organized resource to their collections. Other books in the F. W. Prep series are Extraordinary E-mails, Letters, and Resumes; Extraordinary Oral Presentations; 0 and Extraordinary Short Story Writing0 (all 2005). --Ed Sullivan Copyright 2006 Booklist"
