Summary
The songs of America are as much a part of the country's proud history as the Declaration of Independence. From songs commemorating events from the Revolutionary War to the Gold Rush as well to Broadway standards beloved around the world, this enduring music captures the true spirit of the land of the free, and celebrates the American people, landscape, triumphs, and tragedies. Filled with over 50 favorites from "Yankee Doodle" to "This Land is Your Land" to "Grand Old Flag" and illustrated with classic artwork from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, The Glorious American Songbook is the ultimate treasury of celebrated American music.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 3-5. Here's a very attractive, if slightly odd, package: a wide-ranging compendium of America's favorite songs, illustrated by beautifully reproduced, vintage artwork. Many of the 50 songs are accompanied by an illustration from a well-known artist: Winslow Homer (America the Beautiful ), Andrew Wyeth (Blow the Man Down ), Frederick Remington (Back in the Saddle Again ). She'll Be Coming around the Mountain is illustrated with a vintage postcard; Happy Days Are Here Again uses a Vogue magazine cover. The lyrics are sometimes truncated, and because only a few bars of the music are offered, one must already be familiar with a tune. That's fine for many, perhaps the majority, of the songs; Moon over Miami, The Wabash Cannonball, and Carolina in the Morning will be the least familiar. The whole here isn't really more than the sum of its parts, but this book will still please many adults, who will be happy to share the words and sing the songs with the little ones in their lives. --Ilene Cooper Copyright 2005 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "And just in time for Independence Day, The Glorious American Songbook, compiled by Cooper Edens, with its flag-and-fireworks-cloaked cover will invite friends and family to gather 'round the piano. From tunes that will strike a chord with adults, such as Cole Porter's "Don't Fence Me In," to melodies everyone can sing, such as "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie, nicely pairs a vintage illustration pairs nicely with the song it celebrates.
