Booklist Review: "Reviewed with Neil Morris' The Life of Moses. Gr. 6-9. From the Art Revelations series come these volumes that intertwine religion and art. The oversize format uses great works of art to tell the life stories of two towering religious figures from the Old and New Testaments. Moses offers artwork by Botticelli, Poussin, and Michelangelo, among others, to highlight the major events in the law-giver's life. Each spread takes a specific incident, such as Moses' receiving the Ten Commandments, and illustrates it with a painting keyed to information about the individuals and actions depicted in the work. Other art, including hieroglyphics and artifacts, helps bring the period to life. An identical format is used in Jesus. As with many large-format books that mingle text, sidebars, and artwork, the design of both volumes is sometimes choppy, but the flow is generally good, and the artwork is crisply reproduced. These books will be best used with the help of an adult who can provide additional context. Brief biographies of the artists are appended. --Ilene Cooper Copyright 2003 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "This artistic introduction takes readers through Jesus' life--from the Annunciation to the Resurrection--as depicted in some of the masterpieces of Western art. Among them are Raphael's "The Transfiguration of Christ," da Vinci's "The Last Supper" and van Eyck's "The Crucifixion." The book's large format (9 and 5/8 inches by 13 inches) allows for generous reproductions of the art, permitting readers to linger on tiny artistic details that would not be easily visible in smaller editions. Here, for example, we can read the Greek letters issuing from Gabriel's mouth during the Annunciation, or investigate the enamel and pearl decorations that adorn a Byzantine eucharistic chalice. The brief commentaries are truly helpful and are geared for the beginner, as are the author biographies and timeline at the back of the book. This is a lovely, full-color primer.
