Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 3^-5. Books in the Caring for Your Pet series use pictures, straightforward text, and interesting sidelights about animal behavior to start prospective and new pet owners out on the right foot. Hamilton's is the less successful of the two; the photos are uneven and, as with Ring's book, the index is spotty. Even so, it contains some useful general guidelines for choosing a pet bird and caring for it on a day-to-day basis. Ring's book follows the same pattern of profiling popular breeds, then filling in with information on behavior and maintenance. She is more thorough, though, even mentioning tooth care for cats, something left out of many introductory cat care books. Particularly noteworthy is the series' emphasis on personal involvement with a pet--the authors make it plain that pets need a good deal more than just food and water. The design is nicely varied, and there are plenty of eye-catching photos to make these pets hard to resist. Each book closes with a story or fable about the featured animal, a glossary, a few Web sites, and some self-test questions. Kids won't go wrong if they begin their research here. --Stephanie Zvirin"
