Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "With Mastery, Joan Evelyn Ames joins a new wave of cerebral books on such topics as genius, creativity, and the pursuit of happiness. These new books, written by intellectuals and academics, effectively overshadow the plethora of paperbacks offering prescriptions for a better life flooding book stores, libraries, and supermarkets. Unlike her academic colleagues, Ames comes to this topic in an unusual manner. The scion of wealthy New York socialites (Mom was a writer; Dad was a banker and former chairman of Lincoln Center), Ames grew up in the midst of artists and intellectuals, and previously had conversations like those found in this book over tea or cocktails. Working through personal contacts and her own persistence, Ames contacted and interviewed the artists, actors, architects, authors, and others found in this book, and collected their thoughts on their professions and the secrets to their success. She has gathered an eclectic group, ranging in age and drawn from around the world. Her questions appear ad hoc at times, but yield very stimulating interviews. Her subjects' accounts of discovering their life passions serendipitously are heartening, and their stories of perseverance in spite of adversity are inspiring. Mastery amounts to an oral history of greatness that is entertaining if read selectively, and profound in its entirety. --Ted Leventhal"
