Summary
This super-simple story about two polar bear cubs and what they learn from their mother is both adorable and informative. There's also plenty of humor: one of the "polar babies" throws himself into learning to swim, walk on ice, and fish, while the other always prefers to nap. This book is delightfully illustrated by the talented Lisa McCue.

As she teaches them skills like fishing, swimming, and walking on the ice, one of the cubs jumps eagerly into the activities, while the other sleeps through them. When a much larger bear threatens the little family, they hurry home. There, the more active cub falls asleep, while the former sleepyhead looks forward to tomorrow's adventures. Told with short, simple words, the story has just enough going on to keep young readers interested. McCue's appealing watercolor paintings feature the active bears against arctic backgrounds created in tones of winter white and icy pastels. Well designed for beginning readers. --Carolyn Phelan"
