Summary
Paul and his sister, Lydia, are waiting for dinner. Their younger brother, Jimmy, is in the playroom. It's just another ordinary evening. Mother is mashing potatoes. Father is flipping burgers. Suddenly, they hear a loud thump from the direction of the playroom. Paul runs down the hall to check on his brother, only to discover an alligator has climbed through the playroom window. An alligator! Paul races back to the kitchen with the amazing news, but no one believes him. What happens next makes a hilarious picture book romp. Mary Olson's zany story is illustrated with zest by Tammie Lyon.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Ages 4^-7. Dad is flipping burgers and Mom is mashing potatoes when they hear a thump coming from the playroom. They ask Paul to check on his brother, Jimmy. To Paul's astonishment, an alligator is chasing Jimmy around the room. When Paul reports the news, his parents and sister are skeptical. When he announces that his brother has been eaten, his parents merely ask him to bring Jimmy for dinner. Bravely returning to the playroom, Paul leaps on the now snoring alligator's stomach, prompting a belch that sends Jimmy flying into the air. The contrast between the frenzied action in the playroom and the casual mood in the kitchen makes it all seem even sillier. Lyon's animated watercolors bring the story to life with colorful double-page spreads, some of which advance the story without accompanying text. Pair this with Mercer Mayer's There's an Alligator under My Bed ( 1987) for a rousing story hour. --Lauren Peterson"
