Summary
The new school year brings lessons for Lionel to explore with his class. But Lionel has to find out some things by himself. For example, what will his teacher tell his parents on Back-to-School Night? Can the new boy really wrestle polar bears? And how can Lionel make classtime go by as quickly as recess? Readers will be quick to identify with Lionel and his friends-and to wonder what Lionel will discover next.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. K^-2. This entry in the Dial Easy-to-Read series has four new stories about Lionel, focusing this time on school. Krensky's touch is light; he leaves space for readers to fill in details from their own experience. The accompanying pencil-and-watercolor pictures are warm and expressive. Some of the situations are subtle, even though they're told with lots of laughs. The best story, "Keeping Secrets," is about privacy, how a child can be a different person at home and at school. Lionel's parents know things about him that his teacher doesn't know and vice versa, and Lionel works hard to keep it that way. Another story, "The Stranger," also connects school and home: why does Lionel's older sister pretend not to know him when she's in the schoolyard with her friends? There's an uncomfortable insight here that's not often confronted in children's stories. --Hazel Rochman"
