Summary
At twenty-nine, research scientist Kate Denby was a workaholic, divorced, the mother of an eight-year-old son. And she was weeks away from making a major genetic breakthrough. If she lived that long... Danger has arrived in Kate's backyard with a vengeance, starting with an explosion at a Seattle pharmaceuticals plant and a car bombing at her son's Little League game. Then came the shocking warning: the attacks were connected and she was the next target. Stalked by a remorseless killer, Kate must put her trust in a total stranger, a man whose intentions are nearly impossible to fathom. For no matter what happens, she must protect her son and her work, the work that could save millions of lives. But someone will do anything to keep her miracle from unfolding. Someone not interested in holding out hope but in buying and selling death.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Johansen's successful hardcover debut, The Ugly Duckling [BKL Mr 1 96], an entertaining romantic suspense thriller, is followed by another one that is just as good. Genetic research and industrial espionage are at the center of this story about Kate Denby, a research scientist working on a new way for medicine to be delivered to the human cell. Another researcher, who owns his own company, wants Kate to work for him. He needs what she's working on because it dovetails with the project he's working on: a powerful new drug that will strengthen the immune system beyond anything currently available. But there's somebody out there who doesn't want Kate to succeed. Her attempts to keep away from this diabolic man and his henchmen--and to keep alive in the face of his determination to kill her--are the sum and substance of this fast-paced novel. A set of delicious complications arises, and there's definitely a girl-meets-boy factor at play early on. The result is excellent diversionary reading. --Brad Hooper"
