Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 6^-9. The six books in the Sparks of Life series cover the fundamental chemical elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sodium, and calcium. Each volume begins with the complete periodic table of elements, with that volume's element highlighted, and discusses such topics as atomic weight and element groups. The following chapters focus on the element's history--including valuable information for report writers on scientists such as Lavoisier and Volta--the way the element reacts with other elements, how and where it is found in the world and in outer space, and how it is used in industry. The design is attractive, with photographs and computer-enhanced images on most pages, but the thorough, sophisticated text will better serve more advanced chemistry students than beginners. Each book concludes with a page of brief facts for quick reference and lists of further readings. Other volumes are listed in the Series Roundup in this issue. --Susan Dove Lempke"
