Disaster struck the American heartland when a devastating explosion rocked the nine-story Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Stories of survivors who lost loved ones give the reader a sense of the enormous human tragedy that was caused by this explosion.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 4^-8. Each volume in the American Disasters series gives a vivid accounting of the particular disaster, depicting the chain of events and including many first-person descriptions. Discussion includes accounts of rescue efforts, often the most heart-wrenching stories, and information about the aftermath for survivors. The book on the Oklahoma City tragedy ends with a review of the captures and trials of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. Chapters are brief and punctuated with photographs, which, though not gory, bring the disaster to life in horrifying color. The books are sure to disturb some young readers: Sherrow makes it clear that an earthquake could happen again at any time and that many of the victims in the Oklahoma bombing were young children. But, be it from morbid curiosity or for an assignment, students do sometimes request disaster books. When that happens, books in this series are acceptable in quality. Notes, a glossary, and a list of further readings are appended. Other titles in this series are listed in the Series Roundup in this issue. --Susan Dove Lempke"
