Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 3-5, younger for reading aloud. Berger presents a retelling and explication of eight Jewish occasions: Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkoth, Hanukkah, Purim, Pesach, and Shavuot. She devotes one chapter to each holiday, including the biblical or Talmudic story, dramatized by a full-page, watercolor illustration; a brief summary of the holiday, with a time line indicating the point in history that the celebrated event occurred; examples of customs (dipping apples into honey to represent wishes for a sweet new year, etc.); and suggested activities and recipes, most requiring adult supervision. More and better illustrations would have enhanced the activities section (the symbols suggested for using on Jewish New Year cards are too small for easy tracing), and a glossary of the many transliterated Hebrew words would have been helpful. Although this seems intended primarily for Jewish children, it introduces concepts and activities suitable for sharing within any classroom or library setting.
