Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 4^-6. From the Countdown to Space series, these concise biographies describe the lives and accomplishments of two American astronauts: their childhood interests and education; the qualities that made them valuable as astronauts; their NASA training, their mission experiences, and their activities after retiring from the program. Bluford introduces Guion Bluford, the first African American to travel in space, aboard the shuttle Challenger in 1983. Jemison tells the story of Mae Jemison, who became the first African American woman in space when she flew aboard the Endeavor in September 1992. Each book includes a chronology, chapter notes, a glossary, and a bibliography. Young people interested in the space program will find the texts readable and interesting, though rather short. Many colorful photographs illustrate the books. Check this issue's Series Roundup for others volumes in the series. --Carolyn Phelan"
