Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 6^-10. Two famous women in science are profiled in these biographies in the People to Know series. The book on Sally Ride is a lively account of her work as astronaut and astrophysicist. The focus is on the excitement of the training period and then the rising tension of the launching, the shuttle flight, and the landing. A fascinating chapter describes what it is like for an astronaut to live in microgravity for nearly a week--How does she eat, sleep, dress, wash, go to the bathroom?--and Ride's personal achievement is set within the general history of the space shuttle program. The Goodall biography is not as lively, maybe because it strives too hard to be inspirational, with an insistent drumbeat about her fulfilling her childhood dream. But, as with Ride, it is the work that is most interesting, and Goodall's groundbreaking observations of chimpanzee behavior in the wild make enthralling reading. Both biographies include full chapter notes, a bibliography, chronology, and occasional black-and-white photographs. --Hazel Rochman"
