Summary
A Christmas love story involves an Irish-American everyman named Jack Flanigan and the object of his infatuation, a young Russian woman studying at Harvard, whom he invites home for Christmas, sending his family into a tizzy.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "In this slim offering, the prolific priest-author tells a brief Christmastime love story. Jack Flanigan, an Irish American thirtysomething Boston College student, meets and (against his own counsel) falls in love with Odessa Shuskulya, a mysterious young Russian who is studying at nearby Harvard. Their relationship evolves, and soon Jack's entire family (a large brood from the Chicago's South Side) is badgering him to bring her home. Impulsively, Flanigan invites Odessa to spend Christmas in Chicago, despite what he sees as the dysfunctionality of his family. When Jack and Odessa arrive, most of the family members are in a typical modern Christmas mood: crabby and unpleasant. This being a magical Christmas tale, of course, the exotic, mystical Odessa, with her fascinating foreign ways, weaves her wizardry, ultimately having a tranquilizing effect on the obnoxious Flanigan family and changing their lives and attitudes forever. Greeley's fans will enjoy this uncomplicated, innocent tale. --Kathleen Hughes"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "Not your average Christmas tale, this big-hearted but saccharine short novel sets up callow Boston College student Jack Flanigan with beautiful, soulful Harvard undergrad Tatiana Alexseevna Shuskulya, just in time for Advent. A Russian studies major, Jack first glimpses Tatiana reading a Russian newspaper and, trying to show off his meager command of the language, succeeds only in making her acquaintance. As the two pious but hormonally healthy virgins become friends, Jack worries that Tatiana will spend Christmas alone, invites her (with some trepidation) home to Chicago for the holiday, then watches the Scripture-citing Orthodox girl with the "rich and glorious breasts" sweep his pugnacious Irish family off its feet. Scattered throughout the book are poems, songs, stories from Tatiana's homeland¬Ďand more blarney about Mother Russia and the True Meaning of Christmas than most readers will be able to swallow in such a concentrated dose. As usual, former priest Greeley is a kindly matchmaker and a forgiving Catholic: fans may gobble down his latest confection like so much Christmas rom-baba. (Oct.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
