Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 4^-8. Although the book's title and subtitle imply that this covers all beauty pageants, it is primarily about the Miss America pageant system. After giving an overview of the various types of pageants, Alter takes a look back to the first beauty pageants and then offers a detailed picture of the Miss America contest, its history, and the way it has tried to keep up with the times. One of the book's highlights is its black-and-white and color photographs. Numerous historical photos (including one of a 1941 grandmother pageant) are interesting and entertaining. A well-written, informative look at a topic that still seems to hold a certain magic. A short list of books and periodicals about pageant life is appended. --Ilene Cooper"
