Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Ages 5^-8. As in a previous collaboration, Cinder-Elly (1994), Minters tells a favorite fairy tale in bouncing rhyme, with Karas portraying the action in present-day New York City. Minters' Beauty narrates her story to a hip-hop beat: "The day I was born / I was such a cutie / Mom and Dad called me / Their own Little Beauty." The witch fulfills her dastardly plan by pricking Beauty's finger on a phonograph needle, but the young girl has a plan prepared and saves herself. The traditional ending, with a rock star as the prince, is the only flaw; it seems out of character for such a self-sufficient heroine. Karas' droll illustrations, stylishly done in black and white with muted touches of color, feature quirky, eccentric characters and unconventional perspectives. Primary-grade children will love this, particularly if it's paired with a lushly romantic version. --Susan Dove Lempke"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "The heroine of this fractured fairy tale lives in a high-rise apartment building, listens to a Walkman and is wooed by a guitar-toting prince. Karas's stylish artwork contributes a quirky twist to the tale. Ages 3-8. (Dec.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved"
