Booklist Review: "Gr. 8-12. As Zack Emerson, White created the Echo Company series in which army nurse Rebecca Phillips appeared. This novel develops her character in more depth. Part one re-creates a Vietnam War medical base in claustrophobic and horrific detail. Caring for teenagers and young men mutilated in battle takes its toll on Rebecca as she serves out her time. The men from Echo Company, all killed or wounded (except Snoopy), will be familiar characters for the series' fans. Michael Jennings, who loves Rebecca, loses a leg. In the story's second part, Rebecca returns to Boston, and Michael to Golden, Colorado. Unable to get on with her life until she can resolve things with Michael, Rebecca goes on a quest to find Michael as well as herself. These two survivors connect with each other, and the novel ends on a touching and hopeful note. The reader isn't spared20much in the accounts of war's gory toll--not only on the young men, but also on the young female nurses. Combining action/adventure and romance, the novel, despite its length, will appeal to a wide range of readers. White's terse, abrupt style clearly reflects Rebecca's cynicism and war-damaged psyche, and the portrayal of her search for healing and wholeness is beautifully and believably rendered. ~--Merri Monks"
