Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Here are two more entries in the rock dictionary/trivia category. Bego's Rock & Roll Almanac is an eclectic mix of topics, while Warner's Rockspeak is a more straightforward group of lists. The almanac covers a wide array of topics from chronologies, awards, and Hall of Famers to the more unusual, such as songs about disasters, rock star makeup, prestardom jobs, and lists of star or group names by theme (animals, numbers, etc.). This makes for entertaining browsing, but particularly with its lack of index, it is difficult to know when to use it for answering a reference question. Rockspeak has focused on a more specific set of lists, such as the origin of group names. Other chapters include a list of rock influences--other rock groups, literature, other musical genres, etc. There are two name lists--from stage name to real name and the reverse. The final sections include names referred to in songs and a short dictionary of musical styles and terms. Rockspeak also lacks an index, but by covering fewer topics it is easier to use as a reference tool. Bego is more suited to a circulating collection, where it will find an audience with young adults. Warner can be added to either circulating or reference collections. Either will make a good low-cost secondary purchase for popular-music collections in public and high-school libraries."
