Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "For those people whose hearts thump with anticipation at the sight of a roller coaster, Throgmorton provides a helpful guide. Not only does he list the 196 roller coasters in the U.S. and Canada, but he also includes the addresses of the parks, the telephone numbers, brief statements about the parks, and details about each coaster. A self-described roller coaster addict, he has ridden on more than half the ones he describes. The first chapter details the history of the roller coaster from its beginnings in the sixteenth century to its golden age in the 1920s. With the current popularity of theme parks, the rides are enjoying a revival. The bulk of the book is a geographically organized location guide to amusement parks and their coasters. Each coaster is described with its beginning year of operation, manufacturer, former location (if any), physical and technical information, length and time of the ride, and special features. Most of the entries are accompanied by a black-and-white photograph. The appendix contains a list of both wood and steel coasters operating in the U.S. and Canada; a comprehensive index concludes the work. This title is likely to be the definitive guidebook to roller coasters. Since the author made no attempt to include current days and hours of operation, the book will retain its usefulness without becoming outdated. It is recommended for public libraries, as well as for specialized collections of popular-culture materials. (Reviewed June 1993)"
