Booklist Review: "The Spanish tenor begins his life story with an account of his diagnosis, treatment, and recovery from leukemia in 1987 and 1988. His return to the concert and operatic stages in the following year provides a triumphant and emotional climax midway through the book as the singer discovers that the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy haven't destroyed his voice. The second half of the book then sketches in Carreras' previous life and career. Carreras pays tribute to his mentors and colleagues, describes his favorite roles, and tells his fans the lessons he has learned from his catastrophic illness, but the real heart of the tenor's life is more vividly captured in the early chapters. In a disappointingly slight autobiography, the 42-year-old Catalan divo proves guarded in revealing information about his private life, reticent about relating theater gossip, tediously preachy with strictures on his craft (he deplores avant-garde opera staging, for example). Yet, without overtly exploiting readers' emotions, Carreras won't leave an eye dry as he recalls the ordeal of the bone marrow transplant that hospitalized him at the famed Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute in Seattle for 119 days in 1988.
